CLT 5•5

An upcycled chair designed from CLT offcuts, the thick wood panels usually used in timber building construction. For this first collaboration with a designer from outside Duplex, the Belgian brand worked with Vincent Baranger, co-founder of Studio 5•5.

From waste to singular pieces

We went to meet WoodInnovation, a company in the sector, to identify a new source of material for reuse.

Among other things, this Belgian company makes prefabricated wall panels in CLT (cross-laminated timber). But every door or window cut out of a panel leaves behind an offcut.

This became the starting point for the CLT 5•5 chair: how could these offcuts be turned into a durable chair?

Sourcing

Usually used to construct buildings, CLT changes scale here. The huge offcuts are sliced, revealing a very distinctive striped pattern.

“We played with this unusual pattern at the scale of furniture. We set out to reveal it by repeating it, playing on its continuity between the seat slats and the legs, then machining it into the backrest to create a curve,” explains Vincent Baranger, designer and co-founder of Studio 5•5.

Design & Prototyping

Production & Final product

We aim for a strong presence in the hospitality sector, where furniture is sometimes put to the test. The chair was designed to meet these demands, with a robust construction built to last, while remaining highly functional: it is also stackable.

It can also be delivered flat-packed to reduce the environmental impact of transport.

“Through this approach, we wanted to show that upcycling can meet all the requirements of an industrial, series-produced product,” says Vincent Baranger.

Saturday 7 November at 4pm Launch of the “RE!” podcast

David Abittan of Tema.archi will record the first episode of RE! live at the Upcycling Café, with guests Vincent Baranger and Anthony Lebossé of Studio 5•5.

RE! is the podcast about all the “re”s of design: from rehabilitating buildings to recycling materials, by way of repair and reuse. Over a first season of six episodes, the series gives architects and designers a platform to share their experience and help us understand the new practices shaping the design professions.

Saturday 7 November at 6pm Round tables on reuse in design and architecture

David Abittan of Tema.archi will moderate two round tables with the following guests: Gaston Goldstein (Duplex), Victoire Decarne (QDB), Vincent Baranger (5•5), Charlotte Lovera (Atelier Aïno), Jean Bocabeille (BFV), Minh Ta (Atelier Craft).
