Big Trouble in Chinatown - Saint-Gilles, Brussels
A Cantonese restaurant made for big tables, shared plates and long nights
From the team behind Old Boy and Nenu, Big Trouble in Chinatown brings the spirit of Chinatown to Saint-Gilles. Its three founders draw on stories that run from Hong Kong and Bangkok to London and New York, and the menu follows the same path: Cantonese at heart, with dim sum, roasted duck, char siu and generous dishes meant for the middle of the table. The atmosphere is loud, warm and generous, the kind of place where dinner with friends easily turns into a long night.
For the restaurant, we worked closely with the interior studio Zazie Maquet. Together, we brought our PLY01 chairs into the lounge area, a cosier corner where the pace slows down. The chairs were produced in a dark brown finish with red seats, a pairing that nods to the deep woods and rich reds of classic Hong Kong dining rooms. Here, guests can settle in, take their time and stay for one more round. At the bar, a few TU02 high stools complete the interior, perfect for a quick bite.
Each PLY01 chair is made from thick reclaimed birch plywood sourced from industrial surplus, with the layered edge of the original panel left visible as its signature. Working with Big Trouble in Chinatown felt like a natural match: a restaurant built on stories that travelled across cities, furnished with pieces that come with a past of their own. Sturdy enough for busy service and warm enough for long dinners, they bring a quiet layer of circularity to one of the liveliest tables in Saint-Gilles.
